What were the challenges of installing a commercial solar power system at Federation University?

Synopsis

Fed Uni had the need to offset their power bills and have a long-term return on investment. To achieve this, they installed 100 kilowatts across multiple roofs in challenging locations. The installation process involved using a scissor lift to access the sawtooth roof, which cast a significant shadow on some days. However, the team ensured that shading issues were optimised, and the performance of the panels was not affected by slight shading issues.

<br/>In addition to being green, Fed Uni wanted to install energy-efficient equipment in their gutted building. The team of four workers took two weeks to install the 300-watt panels, despite the challenges presented by the steep pitches of the roof. The panels come with a 25-year warranty, which is longer than most products on the market, and will perform better over the 25-year period.

So Fed Uni, we're looking to offset power bills, they needed something that's going to have long term return on investment. We've installed 100 kilowatts, across a couple of roofs a few inverted locations. Challenges Federation University, access. So, basically with the access, we're using scissor lift to get up onto the roof, you've got the sawtooth roof as well. So, that's casting significant shadow behind it on some days, they have to allow for shading issues, everything is optimised on that roof. So, if there's one slight shading issue in one area, that's not going to effect the other performance of the other panels on the system. So, at Fed Uni, they were looking to be as green as possible.

It was a gutted building, so, they went with energy efficient everything. They're looking to get the best that they could on the roof at the time. So, we had four guys working on that one, took two weeks to install. We had a scissor lift, manual handling, obviously getting stuff up onto the roof. This is a fun install, a few challenges with the sawtooth and the fact that they were very steep pitches, and that was the 300 watt panels, 25 year warranty and it's going to perform with, over the 25 years, as opposed to something throw about 10 year warranty. It's going to perform a lot better than existing products on the market.
